Accessing Private Markets: A new era of investment in private debt
MoraBanking | 03.11.2024
As a result of our agreement with Goldman Sachs Asset Management, at MoraBanc we can now offer our customers investment products in private markets, the latest of which focus on private debt. They’re a kind that’s been inaccessible to the vast majority of people until now, but they’ve now been opened up to more investors.
What are Private Markets?
We call them private markets when the trading of the assets, whether they be fixed income or equity, are executed directly between the buyers and sellers, without the need for the intervention of a stock exchange. Therefore, unlike with the public kind, these assets aren’t listed on organised markets such as the stock exchange.
The different types of private markets include venture capital or private equity, private debt, property, infrastructure and natural resources. One of the fastest-growing markets in recent years has been that of private debt, which provides funding to medium-sized and large companies. This market has quadrupled in size since 2010.
What is the appeal of private debt?
The main attractions of private debt include the potential for returns related to the risk taken. In historical terms, this return has outperformed that of the range of similar instruments in listed markets.
Private debt investment products also allow for greater diversification and they’re less susceptible to volatility. Another distinctive aspect with respect to other private equity investments is the fact that the interest distribution is made from the first months onwards, thus mitigating the J-curve of other private equity investments.
These are generic features, but each product has its own too. At MoraBanc we capitalise on the benefit of having Goldman Sachs Asset Management as a partner to market the European Credit Fund, a product that has the characteristics of private debt while also having greater liquidity, thus making it special.
It’s an attractive fund due to the expected return, which is traditionally much higher than that of the listed markets, and because it doesn’t require a long-term investment.
What kind of investors are you targeting?
Owing to their lack of liquidity and because they’re complex long-term investment products, the offer in private markets is currently limited to investors with a certain degree of experience and knowledge. In Andorra it’s specifically aimed at the so-called Qualified Investor. It’s a form of investment with highly appealing opportunities at the moment, because we’ve reached a historic phase in terms of the return of this asset class, and much more so in the private markets.
